A newly developed scaffold implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of mice recruits and captures metastatic cancer cells and reduces tumor burden in solid organs (Azarin SM et al. Nat Commun. 2015;6:8094).
A team led by investigators at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, combined the microporous scaffolds composed of poly(lactide-co-glycolide), a biomaterial approved by the Food and Drug Administration, with an imaging system using inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography to allow for label-free detection of metastatic cancer cells at the scaffold implant site.
