A newly approved diagnostic tool is the first nucleic acid–based test capable of quickly detecting more than 2 dozen pathogens from a small sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (http://1.usa.gov/1Mi9sIu).

The FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel is intended for use with other clinical and laboratory findings in diagnosing meningitis or encephalitis in symptomatic patients. Either condition can be fatal if not treated rapidly. The new test can detect 14 bacterial, viral, and yeast pathogens in a small sample of CSF and provides results in about an hour.
