Computer Modeling May Lead to More Personalized Epilepsy Surgeries

JAMA. 2016;315(5):455. doi:10.1001/jama.2015.19346

Computer modeling that uncovers the most seizure-prone brain regions in individual patients with epilepsy may enable surgeons to design more personalized procedures for patients, new research suggests.

By applying computational modeling techniques to diffusion tensor imaging scans of 22 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and 39 healthy controls, scientists at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom and their colleagues examined structural connectivity of the brain as they would a computer network, which allowed them to identify brain regions that were more prone to seizures (Hutchings F et al. PLoS Comput Biol. 2015;11[12]:e1004642).
