Administration of oral ivermectin to whole communities, regardless of disease status, has superior effectiveness in controlling scabies relative to topical permethrin, report investigators from Australia and Fiji (Romani L et al. N Engl J Med. 2015;373:2305-2313).
Worldwide, an estimated 100 million persons have scabies, which is transmitted primarily through person-to-person contact. In resource-poor settings, especially in tropical regions, scabies is a major underlying cause of high rates of bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo.
