The FDA has asked for outside assistance to help reverse the US epidemic of prescription opioid overdoses.

As part of its recently announced plan to revamp opioid pain medication policies, the agency has discussed plans with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to develop a new framework for opioid review, approval, and monitoring. The intent is to balance individual patients’ pain control needs with broader considerations of the public health consequences of opioid misuse and abuse (http://1.usa.gov/1oaLRk2).
