Approximately 12.7 million people enrolled in health insurance plans during the open enrollment period that ran from November 1, 2015, to January 31, 2016, about 1 million more than last year (http://1.usa.gov/20cJKrC; http://1.usa.gov/1SUystr). Of those who signed up this year, 9.6 million people purchased health plans through the federally run HealthCare.gov or state-federal partnership health exchanges, and the remainder purchased health insurance through one of the 13 state-run exchanges.
