The FDA has expanded indications for 2 blood clot retrieval devices as first-line treatment for ischemic stroke when used with a clot-dissolving drug within 6 hours of symptom onset.

Previously, the Trevo devices from Stryker Neurovascular in Fremont, California, were used for patients who couldn’t receive or didn’t respond to the clot-busting drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Regardless of whether it’s used with a clot retrieval device, tPA has to be given within 3 hours of stroke symptom onset.
