As a new member of the Senate Finance Committee, and its only physician, Sen Bill Cassidy (R, Louisiana) will play a major role in Republican efforts to replace Obamacare. The Baton Rouge hepatologist has long opposed the Affordable Care Act, but last month outlined a replacement plan that would allow states to keep a version of the current system, if they so desired.
“In my plan, we repeal Obamacare on a federal level, but if states like California or New York think that Obamacare works for them, then God bless them,” he told the new Congress. But other states “should not be forced by the federal government to keep a system that is failing them,” he said.
