Detecting Bacteremia Pathogens

JAMA. 2017;317(13):1308. doi:10.1001/jama.2017.2683

The first test that quickly identifies pathogens involved in bacteremia and the antibiotics to which they’re susceptible has received FDA approval.

The PhenoTest BC Kit can identify 14 species of bacteria and 2 species of yeast directly from blood cultures. In addition, the test provides antibiotic sensitivity information on 18 antibiotics and 2 indicators of antibiotic resistance. The test identifies the infectious culprits by comparing their genetic material with DNA that is known to be unique to specific bacteria or yeast.
