Congress created the Veterans Choice Program in 2014 after disclosure that at least 40 US military veterans had died while on lengthy waiting lists for treatment at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities. Under the new program, veterans can be referred to approved private sector clinicians and health care centers when the VHA can’t accommodate them on a timely basis or because a VHA facility lacks the required services or is more than 40 miles from the veteran’s home.
