The author summarizes researches carried out by him in the laboratory of L. A. Orbeli. The work was concerned with the elucidation of the role of the pituitary in the production of certain effects caused by painful stimuli and with the role of the pituitary in the activity of the central nervous system. Both problems are approached from the point of view of the evolutionary development of the anatomy and the physiology of the pituitary gland in the process of adaptation of living organisms to conditions of life. Part i of the book is devoted to a review of the literature on the subject of the comparative anatomy and the physiology of the internal secretions and of the pituitary in particular. Part II deals with the author's experiments on the role of the pituitary in the production of certain effects caused by painful stimuli. Part III deals with experimental data
