A recently identified cell surface protein may be a key marker of quiescent CD4 T cells harboring hidden reservoirs of HIV-1 that persist after treatment with antiretroviral therapies. The finding, which comes from a study published in Nature, could help investigators eradicate these vexing cells, which make up one in a million CD4 T cells in an individual being treated for HIV infection.
