Data from 3 Massachusetts counties provide a glimpse into the role that the potent pain reliever fentanyl plays in the current opioid overdose epidemic.

The CDC collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the state’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to examine opioid overdose death records and interview people who used illicit opioids, overdosed on an opioid, or witnessed an overdose.
