Sonny Perdue, the new US Secretary of Agriculture, has launched an effort to “make school meals great again,” according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
While visiting an elementary school in Leesburg, Virginia, last month during School Nutrition Employee Week, Perdue signed a proclamation aimed at restoring local control of guidelines related to whole grains, sodium, and milk. The idea, according to a USDA press release, is to “provide greater flexibility in nutrition requirements for school meal programs to make food choices both healthful and appealing to students.”
