Possible Racial Disparities in NICU Breast Milk Use

JAMA. 2018;319(4):334. doi:10.1001/jama.2017.20797

Hospitals located in zip codes with an above-average percentage of black residents are less likely to use breast milk in their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a recent CDC study found.

Non-Hispanic black women are at an increased risk of preterm birth and not breastfeeding, but whether racial disparities exist in the use of breast milk—which the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends as infants’ main nutritional source—in the NICU is not known.
