In the hallway outside, a tray of cookies and a decanter of coffee stand sentry beside the doorway, a token gesture of comfort for visitors and a subtle indication to those in the know that the room’s itinerant occupant, Mr G, has chosen to pursue comfort measures over life-sustaining ones. A signal that we have nothing meaningful to offer him but our best efforts to ease his pain. So far, our best has not been good enough for Mr G.
