The FDA is taking steps to address concerns about its animal research program after 4 squirrel monkeys died during a study examining the behavioral and biological effects of nicotine, according to a statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD.
Gottlieb said the study was ended and the remaining monkeys would go to a permanent sanctuary home. He explained that a team of experienced primate veterinarians and animal care professionals have made 2 visits to the study site at the FDA’s National Center for Toxicology Research (NCTR) in Jefferson, Arkansas, and reviewed the study’s documented procedures and processes.
