Decades after the United States halted shellfish imports from European countries, the FDA is taking steps to reestablish molluscan shellfish trade with the European Union (EU). Resuming trade hinges on finalizing an “equivalence determination” to show that European shellfish safety systems are comparable with those in the United States.
Determining safety equivalence “will help to unlock economic opportunity for both US and EU exporters by creating new market access as well as making a wider selection of healthy and safe shellfish options available to consumers,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, said in a statement. “It will also ensure American consumers that imported molluscan shellfish from Europe is as safe as what we produce in the US.”
