Given the scale of the US opioid epidemic, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, suggested that it may be time to “seriously consider” mandatory opioid prescribing education for physicians.
“Ideally, it might be most efficient to require training at the time of DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] registration and registration renewal that all prescribers must undergo,” Gottlieb said in prepared remarks for the recent National Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit in Atlanta. He noted that education on using buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder could be offered at the same time.
