The diagnosis was catastrophic.
The symptoms were subtle at first. When our goddaughter returned from Japan, her annual summer visit with her family, she complained that she was vomiting after meals. She had lived with us for 6 years by then, and while the vomiting was unusual, we attributed it to the stress of junior year of high school. She took some proton pump inhibitors and the gastrointestinal symptoms abated though she occasionally complained of leg pains and fatigue.
