A Day in the Life: Caring for Transgender Patients in New York City

Back when Joshua D. Safer, MD, first began treating transgender patients at Boston Medical Center in 2004, being trans was almost universally regarded as a mental health condition. Times have changed. Today, the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association no longer classify transgender identity as a psychopathology, although Safer said many clinicians haven’t caught up with this thinking. Safer himself now believes that gender incongruence is a largely biological phenomenon.
