To Prevent Cardiovascular Disease, Pay Attention to Pregnancy Complications

After certain pregnancy complications—hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, or delivering a baby who is preterm or small for gestational age—a woman’s cardiovascular disease risk increases. As women’s health experts push for greater recognition of these complications as a canary in the coal mine for later health problems, a windfall of new studies is starting to answer big questions: how do women go from having a pregnancy complication to developing cardiovascular disease? And what can be done to prevent it?
