GAO Assessment of the Opioid Public Health Emergency

JAMA. 2018;320(24):2520. doi:10.1001/jama.2018.20155

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has not yet used all the tools at its disposal to deal with the opioid public health emergency, according to a recently released report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

At President Donald J. Trump’s request, Acting HHS Secretary Eric Hargan, JD, declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency in October 2017 and renewed the declaration the following January, April, and July. The declaration was spurred by increasing rates of opioid-related deaths and opioid use disorder.
