On December 20, 2018, the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law as the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 (HR 2).1 This omnibus, 5-year legislation authorizes an array of major food and agriculture programs, with an annual budget of $86 billion that dwarfs the budgets of the National Institutes of Health ($37 billion/year), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ($5 billion/year), and Food and Drug Administration ($5 billion/year). Because of the established links between nutrition and health2 and the ongoing obesity epidemic, it is important to understand how the new Farm Bill’s programs and provisions may influence public health.
