Cessation Intervention for Low-Income Smokers

JAMA. 2019;321(8):735. doi:10.1001/jama.2019.0684

For economically disadvantaged smokers, supplementing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and text messaging support with telephone counseling improved smoking cessation rates, according to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine. In this trial, 624 smokers were randomly assigned to three 12-week interventions: NRT; NRT plus text messages offering support, coping skills, and motivation; and NRT, text messages, and telephone counseling.
