For economically disadvantaged smokers, supplementing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and text messaging support with telephone counseling improved smoking cessation rates, according to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine. In this trial, 624 smokers were randomly assigned to three 12-week interventions: NRT; NRT plus text messages offering support, coping skills, and motivation; and NRT, text messages, and telephone counseling.
