Paradise’s Emergency Department Director Recalls California’s Worst Wildfire

JAMA. 2019;321(12):1144-1146. doi:10.1001/jama.2019.0675

Ted Muller, MD, is an emergency physician based in Lincoln, California. Last November, the most destructive wildfire in the state’s history consumed the town of Paradise, where Muller was medical director of the Feather River Hospital emergency department. In January, he spoke with JAMA about the now infamous Camp Fire. The following is an edited version of his account of the disaster and its aftermath.

Paradise was a beautiful retirement community nestled in the foothills of northern California. It was just a nice, quiet little town. The emergency department was a very nice place to work. We’d get busy, but we had a good crew—a good team of people up there.
