In Reply Dr Freeman and Ms Karney outline 3 possible pitfalls of personal health records1 deserving of additional consideration.
The authors identify the dilemma of data storage limitations when patients control and curate their personal health records. In designing meaningful, scalable, and efficient systems, engineers must build these systems with patient and clinician usability in mind. For example, a system that stores the text radiology report of a magnetic resonance imaging study would be superior to a system that stores the text radiology report as well as the large image file on a device with limited memory.
