In Reply Using public data, we found that first-time female PIs received significantly smaller median NIH grant awards than their male counterparts. The median difference was $39 106, with a range by grant type and institution.1 There were no statistically significant differences in research breadth, productivity, or the number of citations between men and women prior to the grant.
