Her Room

The photos on her dresser range from baby
to first grade. The clothes in her closet—
school jumpers, hairbands to tame unruly
curls, small shoes that don’t fit anyone
in the house. You watch classmates and cousins
move on to boyfriends, the drama of teenage
cliques, and fights over what to wear. Games
and clothes from grade school long forgotten.
Most are not sure if they remember her
or just her photographs. You hear news
of graduations, marriages, every
child each of them has. You wouldn’t want
it any other way. You celebrate
with them. You celebrate, and remember.
