Ron was one of the first internists I met when I joined our multispecialty clinic. Unlike most of the primary care physicians, Ron was a common sight on the subspecialty floor. He was a clear-thinking intellectual, gathering and storing medical facts like a late autumn squirrel. I was comfortable with his academic bent; it reminded me of the gastroenterology fellowship I had recently finished. It could also be a source of discomfort. Whenever his crow’s feet deepened behind his glasses, I knew he had an inquiry that was both consult request and pimp question, in equal measure. Just as I had needed to prove myself to my attendings during fellowship, I realized I needed to do so with my new medical partners.
