Tranexamic acid reduces the risk of death from mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) when treatment is delivered within 3 hours, according to a trial in the Lancet.
The study randomized 12 737 patients with TBI to receive tranexamic acid (loading dose 1 g over 10 minutes then infusion of 1 g over 8 hours) or placebo. About 72% of patients were treated within 3 hours of injury.
