It was there on the screen: Widespread osseous metastases. That was the overall impression of the bone scan result. I joined Joyce for a meeting with her oncologist, and I felt my gut twist when I read the words. We’d been through this before––the surprise finding and immediate fear, the diagnostic imaging and confirmatory biopsy, the precarious prognosis. She was the patient, and I was the spouse. But in so many ways, we shared the disease: its elusiveness, its emotional impact, its power to control our life.
