To the Editor For 30 years, philosophers1 and legal scholars2 have pondered the possible disconnect when a person dictates treatment preferences in advance directives for their future self. Psychologists and disability scholars followed, demonstrating that individuals are poor predictors of how they will feel in the future, potentially locking themselves into unwelcome commitments.3
