Although rare in the US, antibiotic-resistant strains of Neisseria meningitidis have been detected in a dozen states, according to a CDC report.
The agency launched a nationwide investigation after receiving reports of drug-resistant N meningitidis serogroup Y (NmY) infections in early 2020. In January, an NmY isolate resistant to penicillin and ciprofloxacin was identified in a patient in Maryland. A month later, a second ciprofloxacin-resistant infection with NmY was found in another Maryland patient.
