Hospital clowns have flourished worldwide for several decades, but do their playful antics help children and adolescents cope more effectively with symptoms such as anxiety and pain? A recent evidence review in the BMJ examined clinical trials in multiple countries and found that interaction with clowns might be useful in managing young patients’ symptoms and helping their psychological adjustment to hospital procedures.
