This is the first half of volume I. It is intended as a guide for otorhinolaryngologists and not as a textbook for students. The contributions are from Soviet specialists. The volume contains an extensive contribution by A. M. Puchkovskiy dealing with the history of the development of otorhinolaryngology in former Russia and in the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. This is followed by chapters on the anatomy, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology and pathology of the ear, otoneurology, the technic of physiologic experiments on the ear, and on the methods of investigation of the organ of hearing. All the chapters are adequately treated. The illustrations, while lacking artistic appearance, are well selected and valuable when considered from the scientific point of view. Particularly valuable is the chapter on the relation of otology to neurology.
