Fall Influenza A(H3N2) Outbreak at a Midwestern University

JAMA. 2022;327(4):315. doi:10.1001/jama.2021.23854

As COVID-19 cases surged in Michigan last fall, another viral threat affected hundreds of people on a university campus in the state.

In early November 2021, the University of Michigan’s health service notified the state health department of a spike in influenza A(H3N2) cases—some of the first substantial influenza activity since the COVID-19 pandemic began. University health personnel were able to detect increased flu cases because everyone who presented with flulike illness received a rapid test for SARS-CoV-2, influenza, or respiratory syncytial viruses beginning in August.
