Substances Added to List of Human Carcinogens

JAMA. 2022;327(8):709. doi:10.1001/jama.2022.1600

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) has added 8 substances to its Report on Carcinogens. The report now lists 256 factors that are known or “reasonably anticipated” to cause cancer in humans. Collectively referred to as substances, they range from chemicals and viruses to agents such as x-rays.

“Cancer affects almost everyone’s life, either directly or indirectly,” National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and NTP Director Rick Woychik, PhD, MS, said in a statement. “As the identification of carcinogens is a key step in cancer prevention, publication of the report represents an important government activity towards improving public health.”
