The experimental study of cancer has made extraordinary advances recently and has furnished an insight into the biologic origins of tumor cells which was not possessed a few years ago. The clinical side, both diagnostic and therapeutic, has been largely a progressive improvement in technic, but in this useful survey of the subject both phases are well treated. Even in the first section, on the transplanted tumor, mention of the work of Shope and Beard on the papilloma of the rabbit shows that contemporaneous material is considered. There is a chapter on the importance of experimental cancer research, with a fair summary of the results. Viruses come in for a short survey. The genetic relationships are touched on in a rather casual manner. There is a good chapter, however, by Butenandt on the structure of the carcinogenic substances.
