In the first part of this monograph the author presents information concerning the acid-base equilibrium of normal pregnancy. From his own studies and the reports in the literature, he concludes that an acidosis in pregnancy is a physiologic occurrence. In the second part of the book the causes of this type of acidosis are discussed and also the acid-base equilibrium in the toxemias of pregnancy. For his investigations the author made use of the method of electrometric titration of the weak acids in the serum filtrate. He believes that the physiologic acidosis of gestation is due to a change in the glands of internal secretion, especially to overactivity of the thyroid. In hyperemesis gravidarum there is a moderate increase in the fixed acids of the blood.
