The first edition of this book was published.fourteen years ago. It is not a formal discussion of the diseases in the field of ear, nose and throat but is a critical discussion of the newer and more important changes in this field. The advent of chemotherapeutic and antibiotic agents has had an enormous impact on the diseases and conditions in this area. The nature of what was once a surgical specialty has been completely altered in many respects. A whole generation of physicians has grown up that know only from hearsay the magnitude and gravity of mastoid infections, for instance, and their complicating entities of meningitis and brain abscess and severe and often fatal sepsis.
