As in the previous editions, Dr. Lichtman reveals his extensive knowledge of the literature on hepatic and biliary diseases. The wide acceptance of the previous editions attests the reliability of the author's material, which begins with the structure of the liver and ends with the treatment of biliary tract diseases. This book is a veritable encyclopedia of all the literature that has been published to date on diseases of the liver. The author critically comments on the contributions and justifiably takes exception to some of the older concepts that have been presented by previous students in this field. Each chapter has been enlarged, and the therapy has been put at the end of each chapter, wherever possible. In the chapter on cirrhosis of the liver, the author discusses its complications and the controversial aspects of the therapy. He concludes that corticotropin (ACTH) and cortisone are not of great value in
