The first edition appeared in 1943. It is a successful presentation of the facts about vitamins, hormones and enzymes for physicians, biologists and students who do not wish to go too deeply into historical and technical detail. The mode of treatment might strike some critics as superficial, yet it is never vague; it has the effect of a brisk survey in which the reader becomes aware of new relations among these important substances. Enough structural formulas are given to exhibit the important points. Each section ends with a concrete statement of the therapeutic uses of the substances discussed and names the preparations available in Europe. The author's style is objective, simple and completely free from affected, complex locutions which sometimes mar books written in German. It will be found helpful and interesting by the group of readers for whom it is intended.
