Directing Council.—  The eighth meeting of the Pan American Sanitary Organization's directing council was held in Washington, D. C., in September under chairmanship of Dr. Hector A. Coll, Director General of Public Health in Argentina. The council, composed of delegates from the 21 American republics and France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom on behalf of their territories in the Western Hemisphere, meets annually to review the work of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau. Dr. Juan Allwood Paredes, Director General of Public Health in El Salvador, and Dr. Bernardo Henao Mejía, Minister of Public Health in Colombia, were elected vice-chairmen. A budget of $2,200,000 was voted for the year 1956 for continuation of the health programs to be carried out with the guidance of the bureau; also available will be $1,181,365 already allocated to this region by World Health Organization for 1956 and other
