The first volume of this work covers the heart, pericardium, and blood vessels, mediastinum, air passages, lungs, pleura, and diaphragm. The second volume covers the gastrointestinal tract, other abdominal organs, urinary system, nervous system, bones and joints, muscles, tendons and subcutaneous tissues and includes an extensive index. The contrast, sharpness and clarity of the roentgen lithographs, and more especially the 10 pages of photographic reproductions with six cuts each, 3 in. by 4 in., are worthy of praise. No radiological author in the United States has been able to afford this type of illustration, although some surgical pathology books have secured ample subsidies. The first edition of this work was published in 1921. This new edition has been rewritten, and there are more than 400 new illustrations. In fact, Assmann relates that almost all of the text is new because of losses of original cuts and other material in war
