ADVANTAGES OF HOSPITAL ADMISSION CHEST X-RAY EXAMINATIONS

JAMA. 1957;163(9):718-720. doi:10.1001/jama.1957.02970440014004
Abstract

• Examination of the chest by x-ray as a routine part of admission to the hosital offers many advantages. The detection of unsuspected communicable disease in a new patient helps to protect hospital personnel as well as other patients. The chest x-ray has been shown to reduce the number of erroneous diagnoses, to be valuable to the anesthesiologist before surgery, to be an important part of the records in accident and compensation cases, and to be especially useful in teaching hospitals. It is essential to the control of tuberculosis at its source and offers hope of earlier detection of cancer of the lung.
