The increase in the use of chemical tests for the diagnosis of disease has led to a number of problems. One important problem has been the difficulty in obtaining sufficient samples of blood or certain other body fluids for testing. This is especially true in the case of multiple testing in infants or children or in cases where venipuncture is impractical, such as in patients who are extremely obese or who are suffering from third-degree burns. The development of ultramicrotechniques for many blood tests has been a convenient method for surmounting this problem, since individual tests can be run on a few tenths of a milliliter of blood. These tests require special equipment, care, and techniques, and this book groups together the requirements for performing 18 or 20 clinical tests on an ultramicro scale.
