This is the first of a series of monographs on thoracic surgery written by thoracic surgeons who were trained by the late John Alexander. In addition to Dr. Alexander's contributions to the development of thoracic surgery, his greatest contribution was his training of young men. The present excellent monograph is evidence of this. Great physicians are often great teachers, and it is proper and customary that the students of such a teacher as Dr. Alexander should express their loyalty and their sense of indebtedness to him by the publication of a commemorative volume. This is an excellent handbook of modern practice and is doubly excellent because of its historical thoroughness and its large bibliography.
