To the Editor:—
The paper by Kessel in The Journal (169:1737-1739 [April 11] 1959) on spontaneous disappearance of pulmonary metastases from a clear-cell renal carcinoma was of great interest, but I was troubled to note that the presumed metastases had not been so proved by thoracotomy, biopsy, and microscopic examination. The x-ray appearance was admittedly suggestive of this type of tumor, but without ultimate proof, one cannot accept this report. This is doubly regrettable because of its great interest and importance. If Dr. Kessel has additional information on this point, he should let us know.
