Abstract

To the Editor:—  The editorial in The Journal, Aug. 27, page 1930, "The Arthritic Hog," should do much to restimulate the interdisciplinary approach to comparative pathology and infectious diseases.The lack of sufficient correlation of information in the United States is emphasized by the general impression that hog carcasses are inspected for trichinosis and, if necessary, condemned. This mistaken opinion apparently extends even into the editorial offices of the AMA and is partially responsible for the complete lack of effort to exclude the trichinous hog from the meat counter.No effort is made by the federal meat inspection service to detect the presence of Trichinella spiralis. This is, and always will be, confusing to the housewife who logically feels that the stamp "U. S. Inspected and Passed" means that such labeled pork is free of disease.
